How Is GERD Treated?
People with acid reflux are generally advised to avoid eating within the three hours before they go to sleep. Additionally, an analysis of controlled studies concluded that elevating the head of the bed is an effective strategy to reduce acid reflux symptoms and heartburn at night ( 10 ). Yet, the study showed that high doses of spearmint may worsen acid reflux symptoms, presumably by irritating the inside of the esophagus ( 47 ). Simply changing your dietary habits or the way you sleep may significantly reduce your symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux, improving your quality of life.
They may also feel nauseous and like they need to vomit. Because drugs work in different ways, combinations of drugs may help control symptoms. People who get heartburn after eating may take both antacids and H2 blockers. The antacids work first to neutralize the acid in the stomach, while the H2 blockers act on acid production.

If you take alginates on an empty stomach, they will leave your stomach too quickly to be effective. A hiatus hernia occurs when part of your stomach pushes up into your diaphragm (the sheet of muscle under your lungs). It may partially block refluxed stomach acid clearing from your oesophagus, leading to heartburn. The increased pressure, particularly after a large meal, may lead to acid reflux into the oesophagus.
I am constantly thinking I have some type of virus because of my sore throat, only to find, after yet another visit to my doctor, that it’s “JUST heartburnâ€. When I was 12 my tummy aches became severe and I spent the next 10 years being tested to see what was wrong. In 1996 my new doctor realized that I did not have an esophageal sphincter and in early 1997 I had fundoplication surgery to help manage the acid that kept going up my throat. The surgery came undone less than a year later. At the time I was only 22 years old so my doctors didn’t think that I should have another surgery until I’m much older and it was up to me to stay on medication for the rest of my life.

I can’t imagine feeling like this the rest of my life. Heartburn is felt as a burning pain that spreads from the upper stomach, or from the area behind the breastbone, up into the throat. As well as acid reflux and heartburn, GERD is sometimes associated with problems swallowing. Other possible symptoms include a burning sensation in your throat, a bad taste in your mouth, and stomach noises. People who have GERD often feel very full.
It took me a year and a half to get it organized. I am taking a year off shift work by opening a small home business. This way I am home all the time, can sleep every night, and enjoy family weekends. Wish me luck. I have suffered from what I thought was heartburn, indigestion for more than 38 years.
