Heartburn occurs in your digestive system. Specifically, in your esophagus. Heartburn involves mild to severe pain in the chest. It’s sometimes mistaken for heart attack pain. Many women experience acid reflux for the first time during pregnancy.

For them, acid reflux may not result in the usual burning sensations it causes in the stomach, chest, or throat, or the sour or acidic taste in the mouth after a meal. For them, the only indication they have acid reflux may be a problem with swallowing, a dry nagging cough, the development of asthma, or the repeated loss of one’s voice (laryngitis). Abdominal Pain PicturesAbdominal pain is a symptom of many possible conditions including appendicitis, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, and other conditions. It may accompany constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, and other symptoms.

It’s diagnosed when acid reflux occurs more than twice a week or causes inflammation in the esophagus. Long-term damage of the esophagus can lead to cancer. Pain from GERD may or may not be relieved with antacids or other over-the-counter (OTC) medication. The lining of your esophagus is more delicate than the lining of your stomach.

Going to Bed on a Full Stomach

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the chronic, more severe form of acid reflux. Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux and GERD. There are two methods for esophageal reflux monitoring, called as On-PPI and Off-PPI.

The stomach acid irritates the lining of the esophagus and leads to the burning sensation known as heartburn. Many people believe that heartburn is related to anxiety. While you won’t see anxiety listed as a usual risk factor for acid reflux, research published in 2018 shows that a connection exists, although the precise reason why is unknown. GERD and anxiety can both cause chest pain, which is also a symptom of a heart attack.

How do you know if you have indigestion (diagnosis)?

In this chapter, we will discuss about this difficult situation, emphasizing on diagnosis and treatment, combined with suggested management of these patients. Introduced in 1955, the procedure consists of wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the lower part of the esophagus and reinforcing the lower esophageal sphincter to stop inappropriate GERD. “I’ve been on this medication for 3 weeks and it helped a lot with my acid reflux symptoms (lump in throat feeling). However, during the second week, I started noticing my mood changing and becoming more anxious/paranoid. Then, in the third week, had muscle aches and panic attacks. I have stopped taking this 2 days ago and am still feeling dizzy, anxious and nauseous. Anxiety/Depression sufferers beware of this medication as it definitely heightens them. Like many sleep disorders, acid reflux may be a hidden problem.

If these generalists are unable to provide adequate treatment, the patient usually is referred to a gastroenterologist, an internist or pediatrician with specialty training in gastrointestinal diseases. The lack of understanding of the physiologic processes (mechanisms) that cause indigestion has meant that treatment usually cannot be directed at the mechanisms. Instead, treatment usually is directed at the symptoms. For example, nausea is treated with medications that suppress nausea but do not affect the cause of the nausea. On the other hand, the psychotropic drugs (antidepressants) and psychological treatments (such as cognitive behavioral therapy) treat hypothetical causes of indigestion (for example, abnormal function of sensory nerves and the psyche) rather than causes or even the symptoms.

It needs more clinical practice and further researches to supplement the definition in the future. It is important to note that medications only address the acid level of the fluid that is refluxing from the stomach into the esophagus.

This backflow is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (acid that reaches the level of the throat). Stomach fluids contain acids and enzymes that help digest food in the stomach, but cause problems elsewhere in the food pipe [esophagus, throat, and voice box]. Reflux disease can be acid or non-acidic. For Acidic reflux, it is broken down into GERD and LPR.

Patients with functional disorders, including indigestion, are frequently found to be suffering from depression and/or anxiety.

Endoscopy procedure is performed on a patient to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum; and look for causes of symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or intestinal bleeding. Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG)An electrocardiogram is known by the acronyms “ECG” or “EKG” more commonly used for this non-invasive procedure to record the electrical activity of the heart. An EKG generally is performed as part of a routine physical exam, part of a cardiac exercise stress test, or part of the evaluation of symptoms.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek emergency medical attention. Heartburn is a painful, common problem that can affect a person’s quality of life. To eliminate it, a person needs to treat the underlying cause, which is acid reflux.

Fernando Herbella, MD, a gastroenterologist at the Federal University of São Paulo in Brazil, and his colleagues examined 222 patients who all suspected they had GERD. Each patient took a 14-item questionnaire to test for anxiety and depression. Some of the patients had these mental health issues and others did not. I know what this acid/reflux feels like, it’s awful, so my doctor prescribed some medication which certainly stopped this, especially at night time, plus you can buy a liquid from your pharmacy which I also use, so yes it does happen, unfortunately.
