GERD Causes and Complications: Esophagitis, Asthma, Cancer, and More

Chewing gum stimulates saliva production and swallowing. This might help dilute and clear stomach acid from your esophagus. You might have a heartburn remedy at hand in your kitchen without even knowing it.

Occasional heartburn is common but does not necessarily mean one has GERD. Heartburn that occurs more than twice a week may be considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems. Tube feedings. In some cases tube feedings may be recommended.

I can’t imagine my life without chocolate. I am 22 years old and 6 months ago I was diagnosed with GERD. As a teenager I was always stressed, as I was living with an abusive step father. I suffered with panic/anxiety disorder along with depression.

MV Currently, a patient with chronic throat symptoms, including sore throat, hoarseness, throat clearing, and globus sensation, presents to their primary care physician and is referred to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist in order to identify the cause of these symptoms. Once referred to the ENT specialist, patients typically undergo a laryngoscopy and, based on the laryngoscopic findings, the condition may be diagnosed as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR, also known as reflux laryngitis), extra-esophageal reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)-related laryngitis. With gastroesophageal reflux disease, the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes between swallows and after eating, allowing stomach contents and corrosive acid to back up and burn or irritate the lining of the esophagus. Normally, a ring of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), prevents acid reflux.

Chewing gum promotes salivation, which neutralizes acid, soothes the esophagus, and washes acid back down to the stomach. Avoid peppermint flavors, which may trigger heartburn. Eat smaller meals, but more often. A full stomach puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a valve-like muscle that keeps stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus.

Laryngopharyngeal Reflux

Many brands on the market use different combinations of three basic salts–magnesium, calcium, and aluminum–with hydroxide or bicarbonate ions to neutralize the acid in your stomach. Antacids, however, have side effects. Magnesium salt can lead to diarrhea, and aluminum salts can cause constipation.

As stomach acid comes up onto your voice box, or larynx, you may find your voice sounds more hoarse or harsh than usual. This symptom may be particularly noticeable in the mornings, since acid is often more likely to move up the throat when you are lying down. Your doctor may also recommend a medication to reduce acid production in the stomach, like Zantac or Pepcid, for a few weeks or longer.Stronger medications may be recommended if diet and life style changes have not worked. Treatment will vary in accordance with the severity of symptoms. It can be as simple as making changes to your diet, like avoiding spicy foods, tomatoes, chocolate, caffeine, citrus beverages or foods, and alcohol.

  • I am very health conscious and follow mostly a vegetarian diet with the occasional “fish” treat but the fact that I have food restrictions doesn’t sit well with me, especially if we’re talking about foods such as tomatoes and citrus fruits which are so delicious and good for you.
  • Lying down increases pressure on the LES, which makes acid reflux more likely.
  • I suffered with panic/anxiety disorder along with depression.
  • Alternatively, a capsule is attached to the wall of the esophagus to monitor pH levels.
  • Never underestimate the power of a good workout.
  • Even if I have a ‘cheat’ day I don’t suffer any set backs like I did when I was younger and on meds.

It is therefore important to describe your symptoms to your doctor in as much detail as possible, and tell him or her when and how often they occur. If someone is thought to have GERD, doctors sometimes suggest that they have a “trial treatment” known as a PPI test to see if they respond. The test involves taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for about two weeks. If the medication relieves the symptoms, then it is very likely that GERD is causing them.

How is reflux laryngitis diagnosed?

I was diagnosed with GERD four years ago and I’m only 21. It is very hard and I feel that people who say “it’s just heartburn” are very ignorant. This is a lifestyle on it’s own. Most of the time I can’t breath properly because the acid reaches up to my nose. I am constantly thinking I have some type of virus because of my sore throat, only to find, after yet another visit to my doctor, that it’s “JUST heartburn”.

During last summer, I was diagnosed with GERD. I had to go to the doctor’s at least 9 times before they found out what it was. So, waiting so much without the proper medication, I also got Barrett’s esophagus. I’m 14, and I think that this is something I should not have to go through or worry about. I mean I’m not saying I’m the only one, but sometimes it worries me, like I wonder if it’s gonna hurt me somehow, and not a lot of people understand what it is.

This time the outcome has not been so good. The GI doctor I saw prescribed two different medications.
