The LES is a muscle at the bottom of the food pipe (esophagus). The LES opens to let food into the stomach.

Certain diagnostic tests for GERD are done by a radiologist. Hiatal hernia usually requires no treatment. In rare cases when the hernia is large or becomes twisted, surgery may be required.

Also, studies have shown that asthma, chronic cough, and pulmonary fibrosis may be aggravated or even caused by GERD. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn.

However, if these symptoms interfere with your daily life it is time to see your physician. Acid reflux usually produces heartburn, whether it is due to a single episode of overeating or persistent GERD. Complications of acid reflux can include any of the following.
