Sleeping on your left, however, may ease the discomfort, possibly because it helps to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, which is located between your stomach and esophagus. The esophagus (the tube that connects your mouth to the stomach) has a tight band of muscles at the lower end (lower esophageal sphincter [LES]) that closes after the food enters the stomach and prevents the stomach contents to reenter the esophagus. If this sphincter weakens or relaxes at the wrong time, stomach acid can back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and its complications.

This is called Barrett’s esophagus. Barrett’s esophagus, in turn, raises the risk of cancer of the esophagus. If you have Barrett’s esophagus, your doctor will want to examine you regularly for signs of dysplasia, a precursor to cancer.
